In a few words

When faced with a problem or dysfunction, we are often tempted to apply quick fixes that ultimately only treat the immediate symptoms of the problem, but never the source.

If the source remains, symptoms may resurface or other adverse effects may occur, so care should be taken to ensure that this source—the root cause—is permanently eliminated.

Lean philosophy proposes a certain number of tools/methods which go in this direction, one of them being the “Five Whys.”

The “Five Whys” method consists of asking yourself the question “Why?” five times in order to get closer to discovering the true root cause of your problem. This ensures that the problem is eliminated permanently by applying corrective measures to the root cause.

The number five may be more or less symbolic, but it also illustrates the need to avoiding becoming satisfied with spontaneous answers—even the most assertive—in the search for what causes a problem.
